Torquay, the official starting point of the Great Ocean Road, is located about an hour’s drive from Melbourne. To reach your destination, you can fly into either Melbourne Airport or Avalon Airport and then rent a car for the most epic journey. If you don’t drive, you can pre-book a bus and tour from Melbourne.
Melbourne Airport (MEL) is 110 km from Torquay and serves domestic and international flights.
Avalon Airport (AVL) is 49 km (30 mi) from Torquay and serves domestic and international flights.
Car hire is available at both airports and in Melbourne’s city centre.
The Great Ocean Road is a scenic drive that can be enjoyed all year round. However, the best time to travel is in summer, when the skies are clear, and the winding cliffs along the coastline are visible.
